I think it was supposed to be a symbol of transcending suffering (not the same as transcendence through suffering which is something a lot of Christians see in it), it's supposed to be a symbol of hope and new life after suffering (ultimately death).
But most Christians don't know their own history or their own rules anyway. And most of them certainly don't follow Christ's teachings!
