Where to eat in Glasgow?

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Other

As we've only stayed in Glasgow for close to 3 days we didn't get a chance to try many restaurants but the two we did try deserve to be mentioned.

The Sir John Moore
A pub from the Wetherspoon-group. I haven't been to any of their other venues but if this is the standard I certainly will. Good atmosphere and great food!

Molly Malones
An Irish Pub obviously ;-)
It was a terrific experience to see a live match here between Celtic and that other Glasgow club. And the food and the beer are great as well! Just looking at the menu makes my mouth water ;-)

Looking forward to checking out more Glasgow restaurants!

How to get around in Scotland?

Well, you can of course always rent a car, something we will certainly do when we'll visit the Highlands, but what if you cannot drive a car?

We didn't travel much in Scotland but we did go from Edinburgh to Glasgow and back. First I wanted to go by train but a friend from Scotland gave me a great tip: why not go by bus?

The buses are very very cheap indeed (just check this site: http://uk.megabus.com/default.aspx) and it's very easy to buy a ticket online.
The drivers are professionals and there is enough space to sit.

So if you want to go from A to B in Scotland cheap, fast and quite comfortable consider taking a bus ;-)

Surgeon's Hall Edinburgh

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Other

There are many nice things to visit in Edinburgh (see the pictures) but there's one where I wasn't allowed to take pics but which you should still visit:
Surgeon's Hall.
It's very interesting and has this great atmosphere of the Victorian days. Even if you are not interested in medicine this is well worth a visit.

La Roche en Ardenne

Not only a rock but a castle and a church as well ;-)
Very nice but quite touristic little town.

Wéris-Megalithic Belgium

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C3%A9ris
If you are interested in Dolmen and Menhirs you should definitely go here some day!

Fays-Manhay

This village is just too small to have anything really interesting but it's a great place to spend your holiday anyway (if you have a car to get around).

Botanic Gardens Glasgow

Beautifull glasshouses!
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/Parks_Outdoors/Parks_gardens/botanicgardens.htm

University of Glasgow Museums

Impressive buildings and fun museums.
The Hunterian Museum was closed for renovations. The Hunterian Art Gallery with the Mackintosh House was great and so was the small Zoology Museum.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum Glasgow

An industrial temple for nature and the arts. Impressive building with an interesting collection of paintings and stuffed animals (my favourite combination!).

Where to eat in Edinburgh?

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Other

There are many great places to eat or have a snack in Edinburgh. We didn't try the more expensive ones like "The Witchery by the Castle" but the more affordable ones were pretty good too!

The Scottish Cafe and Restaurant
A great place to try a local beer with some local cheese (I loved the Dunedin Cheese Board!) underneath the National Gallery Complex with a view of the Scott Memorial.

Delhi Diner
Terrific Indian and Bengali restaurant almost next to our B&B (Barony House). It's a pity they don't deliver in Belgium ;-)

Benugo
Inside Edinburgh Castle, great place to eat some traditional cakes and dinner dishes.

Good Year
Well, we have to try some Scottish Chinese food, don't we? Pretty good with some interesting differences from our Chinese restaurants.

Bierex
A nice pub with some pretty good pub food and a very eclectic choice of music. Very enjoyable!

Where to sleep in Edinburgh?

There are many nice bed&breakfasts in Edinburgh and for our stay we picked two:

Barony House
A very good and nicely decorated B&B! They have no problem with late arrivals if you let them know beforehand, there is a bus-stop almost in front of it, there are nice restaurants and pubs close by, the room is very comfortable, the breakfast is terrific (so much choice!) and it isn't expensive either.
And the best thing: you get fresh Scottish cookies and a liqueur in your room every day!
http://www.baronyhouse.co.uk/ (check out the slideshow!)

Aonach Mor Guest House
An equally nice B&B with great breakfast options (we have to go back to try them all haha). Also very close to a bus-stop, restaurants and pubs. Just a bit closer to Arthur's Seat which we could see from our attic window :-)
http://www.aonachmor.com/ (good deals on their site!)

Saint Giles Cathedral

Edinburgh, March 2011, a cosy cathedral :-)

A nice shop to visit in Berlin: Whisky & Cigars

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Other

Well the title says it all: this is a shop for whisky and cigars (and cognac and rum too according to the pic).

It's a really cool shop owned by women who like to smoke and drink and play chess. If you want to know more about it just check their site: http://www.whisky-cigars.de/
It is in German so you'll need to able to read that language to really get the idea but the site is still nice.

Berlin Museum Objects

Just a few objects that stood out.

Things to do in Berlin: museums

Some of the museums we've visited this time:

Museum für Naturkunde
One of the oldest natural history collections in the world. The building itself is not as impressive as the Natural history in London but it's still quite nice.
Don't miss the famous Archeopteryx and the impressive climate-controlled storage room for their collection of prepared animals.
Btw: you are allowed to take pictures but you cannot publish them, even on-line, without their permission!

Neue Nationalgalerie
Always a good place to see some modern art and interesting exhibitions.
The building by Mies van der Rohe is itself a must see if you are interested in modernism and/or architecture.

DDR Museum
A small museum but very interesting for those who want to see what life was like in the DDR. You can see and touch loads of products, sit in a real trabant, watch tv-series and hear the hit-music.

Neues Museum
Recently renovated museum with Egyptian, Prehistory, Early History and Classical objects. This is where you can see the famous Nefertete bust and a lot of other beautiful old stuff ;-)

Alte Nationalgalerie
A temple for 19th century German painting. If this is your era this is a must-see museum. Impressive paintings!

Altes Museum
It looks gigantic but actually the museum itself isn't that big. At the moment it houses a collection of classical objects (mostly Greek and Roman).

Pergamonmuseum
If you want to see something gigantic this is the museum to be. Inside are life-size parts of temples, gates and palaces. Most famous and beautiful is the Ishtar Gate from Babylon (6th century BC).

Museen Dahlem
One of my favourite Ethnological museum-complexes. Many, many objects and interesting exhibits

Things to do in Berlin: food

Rating:★★★★
Category:Other
There are many many good restaurants in Berlin (it's a big city!) but it's always nice to find some close to your hotel or a place you've visited.
This particular time we had some great food in the following:

Asia Imbiss (Konstanzer Strasse 15, near the U-bahnhoff)
A great place for takeout (not many seats but you can sit outside in the summer). They have many kinds of Asian dishes to choose from and they are all pretty cheap and very tasty. And you can take some plastic knives and forks and eat it in your hotel-room ;-)

Le Buffet in the "Kaufhaus des Westens" (Tauentzienstrasse21-24)
The KaDeWe is the biggest department store in Berlin and a must visit. There is a lot of food on the top-floor and also a restaurant where you can eat lovely cakes. Don't be fooled by the word 'mini' in front of the cakes because they are pretty big!

Beth Cafe (Tucholskystrasse 40)
For some mouth-watering kosher food this is the place to be! Very cosy place and not too expensive.

China Restaurant Shanghai (Kantstrasse 22)
For some nice Chinese food. They make a great sweet-sour fish and they have tasty dishes with duck-meat too.

Café im Neuen Museum
A nice museum and a nice place to eat some lunch. Great sandwiches and many other tasty choices!

Shi-Mai (Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse 5)
Very tasty Vietnamese food! A nice place to sit and eat and the food was really yummy!

Cayenne (Kurfürstendamm 175)
A nice place to eat some more traditional meat dishes. Very cozy and not even that expensive even-though it's on the Ku'damm ;-)
